7th Riddling Derby RESULTS & Book of the Week

Well, readers, sorry.

Let's all take a moment to sigh at the incredible procrastinatorial talent of JTZ Baner.
We have left the blog forgotten, yet again.

But not to worry, we're back in business!

RIDDLING DERBY RESULTS:

2014 Riddling Derby No. 7

Welcome to Iron Wyvern! Today is the beginning of the Seventh Riddling Derby of 2014! Defending champion: Dmitri Pendragon. Who will challenge his title?

EDIT: We're sorry there was no Book of the Week post on Saturday; there was a slight mixup in the choice of novel. This week we'll be back on schedule.

Each of the first three riddles are worth one point, and the last one is worth two. Please honor the other contestants and don't use the internet, of course. That would be cheating.

If there is a tie, we will try to get hold of the contestants for a riddle-off tiebreaker. If that cannot be arranged, we will simply induct both of them into the Hall of Riddlers simultaneously.

All right, you know the rules, let's get started!

Riddle #1: You can easily touch me, but not easily see me. You can throw me out, but not away.

What am I?

Riddle #2: What heavy seven letter word can you take two from and be left with eight?

Riddle #3: If a farmer has 5 chickens, two horses, and his wife on his farm, how many feet are on his farm? (nobody's disabled, too, so don't worry about that)

Bonus Riddle: What is 40 divided by 1/2, plus 15?

Comment below with your answers, suggestions, thoughts, love letters, etc. Comments will be moderated, so don't worry about letting other contestants know the answers.

2014 Riddling Derby #5 RESULTS

Welcome, one and all, to the Iron Wyvern! In conclusion to the 5th riddling derby of 2014, I will now list the answers, the answerers, and the champion.

First off, our contestants for this week. We were a bit short on players this week. Feel free to tell your friends next time a riddling derby rolls around.

Contestants:
Juliet Lauser
Dmitri Pendragon

Riddle Number One (worth 1 point):
Mom and Dad have four daughters, and each daughter has one brother. How many people are in the family?

Answer Number One (a dead giveaway): Seven. Both of this weeks contestants answered this correctly.

Riddle Number Two (worth 1 point):
You have six black socks, four brown socks, 8 white socks, and 2 tan socks, all in one drawer in the dark. How many do you have to pull out to know that you have two of at least one color?

Dmitri answered: Two, once you turn on the lights.
Juliet answered: Five, because there are only four different kinds of socks.

Unfortunately for Dmitri, we only specified that it was dark, NOT that specifically that the lights were turned off. Juliet actually solved the puzzle. This point goes to Juliet!

Riddle Number Three (worth 1 point):
Why can't Kevin Smith, who is living in Canada, be buried in the USA?

Answer Number Three: It is heavily frowned upon by authorities to bury people while they are still alive.
Both contestants got it right!

Bonus Riddle (worth 2 points):
What do the numbers 1961 and 6009 have in common, other than that they're both odd numbers?

Bonus Answer: They are both themselves when turned upside down. Both contestants got it right!

Final Point Tally
Dmitri Pendragon: 4
Juliet Lauser: 5

Congratulations, JULIET LAUSER, you are our 5th champion of 2014! Your name shall be inscribed in the Hall of Riddlers.
Dmitri Pendragon, since you thought of such a clever, out-of-the-box answer for #2, even though you did not win, you will be awarded an extra point in the next Riddling Derby in which you compete and thus have an advantage.

Now, thank you for reading and playing! I know the riddles weren't especially hard this time, but I will pick an even harder bonus riddle for next time. Enjoy your day!

B. This round, I'll give a special bonus riddle that's worth two. It'll be extra hard though.
C. Down at the bottom, I'll give three facts about all the dragons writing The Draconian Letters.
D. Comment with your answers to the riddles below. Whoever gets the most points wins and is commemorated in the Hall of Riddlers.

All right, let's start!

High Nooners

If we may be so bold as to quote Arnold Schwarzenegger; 'we're back!'. Copyrights forced us to change it....
Anyway, as I said in the morning post, we will have several posts on the calends of the afternoon. and so, to begin.
Firstly, this High Nooner is only the lip of the ice burger, as its Draconian Letter will start off a series of posts throughout the afternoon, which shall start with something called a Sunday Fiasco (think Weekend Disaster Post), will flow on through a Riddling Derby, probably several more letters, and on and on, etc..until the Finale Extravaganza, where we'll most likely crown a winner, pop a few balloons, and so on.
Lets get to the letter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Smok,
Perhaps you are wondering why I haven’t written in such an extended period. As your other uncles seem indisposed, allow me to explain our letters’ ‘leave of absence’ per se.
Let me say first our justice system is cracked. Wouldn't you say the flight to a damsel’s cave to save her from bloodthirsty monosyllabics merits above 45 MPH?!
But no, when I was half way to your old cave, flying slightly higher than my temporarily allied brothers, a pair of Skyway patroldragons intercepted me, one trying to handcuff me while the other accused me of flying ten over the provincial speed limit.
I of course was most courteous, poking the cuffer in the eye with one wingtip I bashed Mr. Riot Act upside the snout and the chase was on! Alright, they caught me within fifty tail lengths, and just managed to take me in.
The next indignity was that the judge sentenced me to a life’s sentence of eight months in the county jail! I couldn’t have that, as my warranty on Incinerating Quarterly was about to run out, and that last issue is always a doozie.
And so I set about working out a masterful plan for my escape from the jail. I was kept under strict guard of course, they knowing my reputation, and locked in a maximum security cell on the jail roof. The skylight was nice for a view, but moving on.
I quickly accumulated a brilliant plan, which worked out to the letter in execution.
Stage One: I collapsed in my cell, throwing in a strangled cry of anguished pain for good measure.
Stage Two: That done, I got up, bashed the wall to pieces, knocked out the guard and ended the day with a mass breakout of all the inmates.
Stage Three: Once safely out, I stole found a convenient heard of goats and bombarded the inmates until they gave up and went back inside the jail.
Brilliant. Sometimes I surprise even myself with my originality.
But the far greater trouble I had forgotten that I had broken out to preserve was the captive princess Limmie the Mildly Cute! Most likely your other uncles had bungled the operation without me, and I flew swiftly to her cave, anticipating a terrible tragedy.
However, it was even worse than I had thought. Those two catch cloths had succeeded without me!!! The ground shook with the indignity of it…
Unfortunately, it seems your uncles were arrested on charges of destroying the pieces after their rescue of your date. How terrible! How awful! This is fabulous an unfounded disaster! My heart was torn asunder.
Thankfully my heart heals fast and I got it all in perspective. That perspective I shall not entail to you my nephew, as it isn’t appropriate for those below 300 as there is a life lesson to be learned in here.
I’ll get back to you on that,
Your mourning and appreciative uncle,

Trubodox the Scarlet

P.S. Oh, and by the way, Limme the Mildly Cute was found wandering the hills of Yovi by Slimtail the Thickheaded. Seems she was a mite delirious, muttering about flying pigs and fiery beans.
          P.P.S. Most intriguing.
          P.P.P.S. I believe I’ll investigate
          P.P.P.P.S. More into
P.P.P.P.P.S. Your erstwhile uncles
P.P.P.P.P.P.S. imprisonment.
P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. Could be
P.P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. Interesting

Last Day to First Day!

Dear Readers, Followers, cart managers, and hamster barristers.
As you've read, we included ourselves in last years Camp NaNoWriMo, the summer version for the November trial to write.
But this year, the Camp has become so popular that it has expanded out of the warm spells to the month of April, and we've all three decided to do ti again this year!
As this is the day ramping up to the midnight strike starting, we thought we'd give one more before-April post before we unsheathe our pens, bare our computers, and do battle with the terrible Sore Thumbs, the juggernaut Writer's Block, and the well named, inescapable force, Deadline.
As something for you to think about, here is the schedule for what new, old and middle aged things we will put forward probably in April, and certainly in May.
The Weekly Draconian: An innovation to the Draconian World, giving interviews with well-known Draconian persons, closeup stories on the latest scandals, adverts, and distinct intelligence into
The Draconian Letters: Messrs. Trubodox, Semithino and Scaligar will be back in fully fledged glory as they come together to rescue a misunderstood damsel, fight like ferrets in a bag for the sunday paper, and continue to barrage Smok with advice, intel, harrowing tales and outright crossbow threats.
The Riddle Ogre: Sometime or other our procrastinations will fall short and we'll finish the story.
Exclusive Fantasy Interviews: The blog will host several more unusual characters, sporting strange tails, stranger tales, and sometimes even interesting perspectives.
Riddling Derbies: Yet again we shall come, we shall see, and we shall solve some more of the various riddles and poetical puzzles we stake to the board.
Short Stories: As ever, we'll shoe horn in a few novellas, maybe some poetry, and with only a few lumps in them.
Thats all for now, and quite enough for anytime.
As Caesar would say, Jacta Alaea Esto.
Let the games begin.

Riddling Ogre Derby

Greetings! And welcome to the next Derby de Riddle, except, this day; we do it differently.
As you have noticed, we were unable to post the final installment of the Riddle Ogre story, due to complications involving smelly socks, anonymous computer nerds, and a very fat gerbil.
However, now we are working hard on finishing the Ogre-oriented Novella, and we give you a chance to have a part in this final section of the story, as their will obviously be no poles at the end of the story.
Here're the rules:
In this unit addition to the Riddling Derby saga, we shall post a series of riddles, and whoever solves most or even all of them, will be allowed to…(commence rising tide of suspenseful music)…Name the character that Ander meets in the starting pages of the Finale Installment.
If you are brave enough, read the riddles below and see if you can rise to the occasion. If you are not, we shall mash you up and feed to our pet Wyvern. Let us begin….

(Challenging) Riddle Alpha: What do you get when you cross an Automobile with a household animal?

(Hard) Riddle Beta: YYURYYUBICURYY4me

(Hardest) Riddle Gamma: My First is in Hound, but not in Dog. My Second is in Woof, but not in Dark. My Third is in Whine, but not in Whimper. My Fourth is in Muzzle, but not in Mutt. My Fifth is in Puppy, but not in Cur.
What am I?

There you go, three riddles that, if answered correctly, shall give you power unimagined over the story to come.
(Hints are available for a flattering person who buys stock in starbursts)

2014 Riddling Derby #2 RESULTS!

Welcome, readers one and all, to Iron Wyvern. Riddling derby #2 of 2014 is now, henceforth and forevermore, closed. We'll be announcing the winner in just a second, but first, we will recount the riddles, and their successive answers, upon this occasion.

Riddle Number One:
Mary's father has five daughters, four of whom are Nana, Nene, Nini, and Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

The Answer: Mary.

Riddle Number Two:
What has four eyes but cannot see?

The Answer: Mississippi, or really anything with four i's in it that can't see anything.

Riddle Number Three:
A man was driving a truck. His lights were off, and the moon was not out, but there was a woman in the road up ahead. How did he see and avoid her?

The Answer: It was daytime.

Now, our two contestants this week, Hyperlinkzer and Dmitri Pendragon, were very closely matched, but in the end, one rose to become the WINNER of the Second Riddling Derby of 2014, and that blogger was......drumroll......:

Hyperlinkzer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (click here to check out his blog)

Congrats, Hyperlinkzer! You will be inducted into the Hall of Riddlers. Be sure to tune in the next time we post a riddling derby so you can defend your title as Master Riddler.

And here is the link to Taisia Tinuviel's blog: click here. We didn't include it last week, I don't believe.

Anyway, have fun with the nonexistent master riddler's wreath! Your name will be up in the Hall of Riddlers A.S.A.P.

And now for some draconian fun facts.

----------------------------

Scaligar says that castle-tipping is too childish for the likes of him, but he secretly sneaks out every once in a while to push one over.

Trubodox keeps a healthy correspondence with a family of cows in the Eastern provinces. Yes, that's right, talking cows are  for real, and these ones have a typewriter!

Semithino, in the years before he started to correspond with his nephew Smok, was known as somewhat of a depressed recluse. Some suspect he came out of his slump for the sole reason that he now had another sentient being to talk to, as opposed to his braindead relatives.

-That's all for now,
JTZ Baner

2014 Riddling Derby #2

Welcome, readers, to the Second Riddling Derby of 2014!!!!

Here's how it works, if you're new:

I post three riddles.
You comment with your guesses as to their answers.
This weekend, I will announce the winner, who is the person to have correctly guessed the most riddles.
The champion of last week's riddling derby was Taisia Tinuviel; whoever wins this time will also be inducted into the Hall of Riddlers as a riddling champion.

All right, here we go!

Riddle #1: Mary's father has five daughters, four of whom are Nana Nene, Nini, and Nono. What is the name of the last daughter?

Riddle #2: What has four eyes but cannot see?

Riddle #3: A man was driving a truck. His lights were off, and the moon wasn't out, but there was a woman in the road up ahead. How did he see and avoid her?

Comment below with your answers. Now for some fun draconian facts!

----------

Scaligar never eats potatoes, because of the time when his old archnemesis Jaklos the Cunning poisoned the mashed potatoes in his stew.

Despite his now benign nature, the reputation of Semithino's youth still instills fear in the townsfolk of certain southern provinces. They call him the Phantom of the Night, who can burn an entire town to cinders with one puff of breath. In fact, this is an exaggeration. Semithino was just extremely intoxicated when he accidentally stumbled drunkenly through a town and caused more mayhem than Gargazath on steroids.

Trubodox uses purple ink in all of his letters to Smok, because for some reason when Geekadox was living as his doppelganger, the crazed fandragon purchased purple ink in extremely large quantities and stored it up in the basement.

2014 Riddling Derby #1 RESULTS!

On Tuesday, the First Riddling Derby of 2014 was published on ye olden blog, Iron Wyvern, and was met with much riddle-guessing by ye olden bloggers.

Now, on Friday, we are here convened to give the results of the First Riddling Derby of 2013. I know it's a bit early to end the contest, but we have other things to move on to. So be it.

I gave you three riddles to solve, and one of you has been crowned the victor, now holding the title as Riddling Champion of 2013. His or her name shall be forever inscribed in the Hall of Riddlers to commemorate this precious achievement.

The First Riddle was:
A donkey behind another donkey, I am behind that second donkey, but a whole nation behind me.
What am I?

The correct answer: Assassination.

The Second Riddle was:
How many times can you subtract 5 from 25?

The correct answer: One, or once.

The Third Riddle was:
As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks.
Each sack had seven cats.
Each cat had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?

The correct answer: One.

Now, the winner is:

Taisia Tinuviel!!!!!!

Congratulations, Taisia! You now hold the title, until someone beats you in an upcoming Derby.

And now for some announcements! We're going to keep the background indefinitely; comment with your thoughts about it. A Weekend Disaster Post is upcoming, whenever one of us has time to write one up.

To embue a more festive mood to the time of tornado damage, I welcome you all to the latest in a short line of Riddling Derby puzzler results!

I have consulted the Derby's comment box and accumulated all the correct answers to see who answered enough of the challenges to be honored with the invisible, and now slightly pixelated, wreath of accomplishment.

And the winner, is.....Hyperlinkzer! Congratulations! Adulations! Hyperventilations! Thank you Hyperlinkzer, for taking part in our XI Riddling Derby! And now if you'll pat your head you might just feel nothing, as are the traits of an invisible wreath of honor. How lucky are you!

Apologies to all who solved the riddles but not in time and quantity to beat Hyper. And before we go I will install a cursory list of the solvers and the riddles solved thereof.
